When I tell someone that I am a Health Coach, I often get a bit of a blank look, so thought I’d better explain myself.
First a bit about health…
As a broad generalization, people are living longer than they were 50+ years ago. The catch is that while this seems like a good thing, research shows that a large proportion of the population spend the last 15 -20 years of their lives living with chronic illnesses that require medication!
The reality is that there is a big gap between living a healthy vital life, as opposed to merely surviving.
Modern world causes of poor overall health are:
- Smoking
- A sedentary lifestyle
- Alcohol
- Poor diet
- Chronic stress
Which can lead to chronic conditions like:
- Pre-diabetes
- Heart Disease
- Stroke
- Some Cancers
- Some forms of Alzheimer’s
Okay, so where does a Health Coach fit in?
Well, just as a Business Coach guides a businessperson in pursuit of their work goals, a Health Coach does the same thing, only in pursuit of a person’s health goals.
We identify the areas that are contributing to your overall poor health (both physical and mental), and then work alongside you to help you change your behavior and adopt new healthier habits. (i.e., make lifestyle changes).
By asking curious questions, really listening to a client, and cutting through the often-conflicting misinformation, a Health Coach can map out a plan leading to healthier outcomes.
Each Health Coach will have their own area of interest and expertise, my area is Midlife and Healthy Ageing. I am passionate about helping (mainly women), set themselves up to be healthy and vibrant as they age, enabling and empowering them to live the life they want.
